RONALD GRAHAM CONEY (RON)
Consulting Engineer Transmission & Distribution
Ron Coney is an electrical engineer with over 40 years of experience in power electrical engineering design,
operations and maintenance in generation, transmission and distribution.
Mr. Coney is an electrical protection specialist and has extensive experience in the definition and handling of power
quality problems including for example, the application of SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) to
mitigate voltage dip (sag) problems on a 1MW paper machine.
His design and commissioning experience in substations extends to both primary and secondary plant and systems
up to 765kV AC. He has managed all aspects of utility secondary plant engineering (protection, telecommunications,
network control, metering & measurements and security systems). He was responsible for the review and
acceptance of the Koeberg nuclear power station main generator protection (GPA) and the design, specification and
commissioning of sub synchronous resonance protection (GPB) for the main alternators. He also designed, specified
and commissioned the 400kV yard protection at Koeberg NPS as well as the conceptualization and implementation
of the Koeberg Auto Start System (KAS) which uses the Acacia gas turbines to increase the reliability of the offsite
supply to Koeberg NPS.
During his time as technology strategy and policy manager for Eskom 1992 to 1999 he was responsible, inter alia,
for the department that prepared all Eskom of Standards and Specifications and which provided the support
functions to the ESLC (Electricity Suppliers Liaison Committee) that ran the NRS (National Rationalisation of
Standards) project. Ron was chairman of the industry working group that developed the initial power quality
standard for South Africa – NRS 048 (all parts). He received the Eskom Chairman’s Award and the John Mungenast
International Power Quality Person of the Year Award (1997) for his contributions to the development of voltage dip
paradigms and standards in NRS048.
He has extensive technology strategy development experience and has developed utility based technology
businesses including fixed and mobile telecommunications. He has been a board member and chairman of a
number of joint venture companies associated with Eskom the South African national electricity utility. Ron is a Past
President (2002) of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE).
In recent years he has been extensively involved with the grid connection of renewable IPPs (Wind and solar) as well
as cogenerators in South Africa. He has broad experience with the balance of plant design for renewable power
plants as well as design audit and the resolution of design and specification problems associated with introduction
of offshore equipment and systems into Southern Africa. Ron has participated in a number of of the Grid Code IET
Meetings dealing with Solar CSP and SCADA requirements for renewable power plants.
Recent utility experience includes substations and lines from 11kV up to 400kV and the protection coordination of
IPP generators and MV networks for mines and works.
Ron is a registered Professional Engineer (South Africa), a Chartered Engineer (UK), FSAIEE, FIET and he holds
Government Certificates of Competency as an Electrical Engineer - for both Mines & Works and Factories.
